Team Shots and Goals by Period - 2014 Fall DCHL and MDHL Seasons

By Owen E.

It's that time again! What time you say? Time to dive into the great stats that the DCHL tracks for all its games.

Goals For/Against

These charts are similar to the ones created from previous seasons (see week 3 of the Winter season as well the 2013 Fall season). I included some of the observations that stood out to me, but many of the patterns noted in the charts from previous seasons also still apply so review those posts for things to look for in these charts (e.g., Team A allows more goals in the first period than they score in an entire game, Team B gets most of their goals/shots in the first two periods and then falls off in the 3rd, etc.).

The charts are stacked with numbers for the 1st period on the bottom (darkest colors), 2nd in the middle, and 3rd on top (lightest colors). The shots and goals charts are sorted by the final season "results points" (which includes playoff games), and the differentials charts are sorted by shot differential per game. Click the charts for a larger view.

DCHL - PRO Division

All PRO teams played ten games; a seven-game regular season and three playoff games.

  • Puck Buddies score about 4x more goals than they allow. They score more goals in the 1st period than they allow in an entire game.
  • Warriors were almost even in goals scored and allowed in each period.
  • Warriors snuck into the top 4 in the standings despite a slightly negative goal differential, but PB, Walkers, Blacks, and PuckU are the clear top 4 teams in scoring/defense with significantly more goals scored than allowed.
  • PuckU seemed to play close games through the end of the 2nd period, but outscored their opponent by more than 2x in the 3rd.
  • Snake Eyes was relegated to REC after this season...
    • They allowed 2x as many goals in the first period alone as they would score in an entire game.
    • They scored as many goals in an entire game as the average PRO team scored in the 1st period.

DCHL - REC Division

Most REC teams played 10 games; however due to the playoff structure Stingrays played 11 games and 5 Minute Major played 9 games.

  • Funks scored more than 5x as many goals as they allowed. They also scored 2x as many goals in the 1st period as they allowed in an entire game. This was their first season in REC having been relegated from PRO.
  • Slashing Pumpkins scored about as many goals in a game as they allowed. Their scoring was evenly distributed among periods, but they allowed almost of their goals in the 1st and 3rd periods.
  • Stingrays allowed most of their goals in the 2nd period (the most of any REC team). The 2nd period is also when they scored the fewest goals.
  • Boogies and Scabs allowed about the same number of goals, but the Boogies scored about 2.5x more goals.
  • Scabs allowed slightly more goals in the 1st period than they would score all game. Their 3rd period is the worst period in terms of goals allowed by any DCHL team.

  • Holy crap John Romps (goalie for Scabs and PRO division's Snake Eyes in Fall 2014) faces a lot of shots!
  • Funks and Scabs are almost exactly opposite in terms of shots for/against by period.
  • 5MM were 7th in shots taken, but allowed the 2nd fewest.

DCHL Summary

MDHL

All MDHL teams played eight games; a six-game regular season and two playoff games. MDHL stats are reported by halves (H1, H2).
