DCHL Fireside Stats: 2014 Winter Season Week 7 - Introducing a new metric!

There has been talk over the last few weeks about the following topic: Do some star players mean disproportionately more to their teams (at least from a goal creation perspective) than other star players mean to their respective teams?

A couple of seasons ago, we attempted to answer this question by looking at the number of unassisted goals scored by players. This approach had obvious flaws: For example, would a player who ONLY scores unassisted goals be considered more or less valuable than a player who scores goals AND contributes assists?

Last Season we introduced two new stats to try to assess individual player impact:
-          % Team Goals Scored = (# Player Goals) / (# Total Team Goals)
-          % Team Goals Contributed = (# Player Goals + Assists) / (# Total Team Goals)
These metrics are in improvement, but they do not take into account the ability of a player to “create their own goals.”

In our everlasting pursuit of useful (i.e., argument generating) metrics, we decided to make one more attempt at quantifying which players have the greatest individual impact on team goal scoring. The result is the One Player Team Index (OPTI). The formula for OPTI is pretty straightforward:
OPTI = (# player goals + # player assists + # player unassisted goals) / (Total Team Goals)
In essence, we’re granting players an extra point for assisting on their own goals.

After reviewing the resulting data, it was noticed that OPTI is driven in part by the number of games played. To assess the impact a player has on a game-by-game basis, we added OPTI per game (OPTPG).

The following examples depict how OPTI and OPTIPG can be used to assess the contribution of individual players to team scoring across both an entire season, and on the games in which they actually played.

As you can see in Table 1, Keith Ing. has an OPTI of 100 and OPTIPG of 14 for Funkmaster Redux. The next highest values for this team belong to Simon Kant. with values of 36 and 8, respectively.

Table 2 depicts the OPTI and OPTIPG values for Puck Buddies. As you can see, Puck Buddies has multiple players with OPTI values above 20, but it appears that Jake Ber. is the definitive leader with an OPTI of 84.  However, when we look at per game contributions we notice that Brat Pat.’s OPTIPG of 10 is right up there with Jake’s OPTIPG of 12.

Table 3 lists all players with an OPTI of 40 or more.  None of the players on this list should be a surprise. It is obvious the players at the very top of this list definitely contribute to a disproportionate number of their teams’ goals.  Here are a few other items of note:

  • Dean Eas. played in only 4 games for the Stingrays, which gives him an OPTIPG of 21!
  • Ryan Bon. Is right up there with Keith Ing. with an OPTI of 100
  • John Gra. (OPTI = 80) and Fabian Mue. (OPTI = 60) appear to be the offensive engine behind the resurgence of The Untouchables.
